Frequently asked questions

Why do I see boxes or question marks?
The player may be decoding the file with a different character encoding than the one used to save it.
Is encoding detection always certain?
BOM and valid UTF-8 detection are strong. Distinguishing similar legacy single-byte encodings is heuristic.
Is UTF-8 safe for modern players?
Yes. UTF-8 is the most portable modern choice for multilingual subtitle text.
